2017 In Review: Best Beauty Buys

As we say goodbye to 2017, we also say thank you!

Thank you for another year of amazing products. Skincare, makeup, body, everything beauty! I’ve compiled a list of all my best buys this year and can’t wait to share every single one with you!

Let’s get started!

Aztec Indian Healing Clay – CAD 16.99

If you read my blog post on this magical little mask then you already know I’ve fallen in love. I bought this guy back in September when I was in Florida. It was the perfect mask to use after a long, hot day. It helped me feel squeaky clean and get rid of the built up gunk and congestion in my skin.

Now that we’re well into the winter months, I’m still using this mask regularly. Once a week to be exact. My texture is so much better now compared to how it was a few months ago – I owe it all to this mask.

LUSH Cup O’ Coffee Mask – CAD 28.95

This has been my favourite scrub for years. I took a long break while I ventured out and tried new products. I came crawling back this year, begging for forgiveness.

I’m a huge coffee lover. That’s why the first time I walked into a Lush with my boyfriend he picked this product up and said, “OH, you would like this one!” And like it I did.

It’s the perfect way to start your day. I apply the mask first thing in the morning, brush my teeth, shower and do all the other things I need to do. After about 15 minutes, I remove it, washing it away in small circles. I’m left with an extremely soft complexion and an amazing lingering smell of a good ol cup o’ coffee!

LUSH Whoosh Shower Jelly – CAD 15.95

This is another oldie but goody. I also took a long hiatus from this shower jelly but when I returned, BOY was the reunion long awaited.

If you love citrus scents and feeling clean, this is for you! I rip a little piece off, rub it into my loofa and lather up. It’s best used in the morning or after a workout!

When I’m feeling tired and need a ‘pick me up’, I just pick up this shower jelly. My skin feels awakened and revitalized. This is my absolute favourite shower jelly and it wont be leaving my shower in 2018.

MAUI MOISTURE Shampoo & Conditioner

Shea Butter Shampoo (Heal & Hydrate) – CAD 11.34

Agave Conditioner (Strength & Anti-Breakage) – CAD 11.34

I was on the hunt for a new regular shampoo and conditioner after going blonde. I had a few requirements: Cruelty free, natural ingredients, light scent, smoothing and softening.

This sounds simple enough but my search was long and hard. I tried so many different products from OGX that I just didn’t like. I was left with frizzy, brittle hair that just needed a pick me up.

When I finally found Maui Moisture and paired these two up, my mind was blown and my hair was SO thankful! Maui Moisture stands out to me so much because instead of using water as their first ingredient, they use aloe juice. With a culmination of other hair loving ingredients, your left with super soft, manageable hair.

KATE SOMERVILLE EradiKate Daily Cleanser – CAD 48

I purchased this cleanser early this year. I bought it after seeing a photo with a one liner saying “IF YOU HAVE ACNE AND HAVEN’T HEARD OF THIS CLEANSER, I DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING WITH YOUR LIFE.” I remember word for word only because I still have the screenshot.

I read up about it and bought it the very next day. I am forever grateful to the woman that recommended it – WHAT WAS I DOING WITH MY LIFE? I use it once a night with my Clarisonic. It has some great ingredients like Rice, Oat and Honey to nourish your skin. The powerhouse though – Sulfur 3%. Sulfur helps to exfoliate dead surface cells and unclog your pores.

My skin went through a purging and peeling phase but after, I was left with smooth, shiny, CLEAR skin. I’ve gone just a couple of days without it and have begun a spiral into a dark hole of despair as my skin worsened before my eyes. If you’re looking for clear skin in 2018, look no further!

JUJU AQUAMOIST Hyaluronic Acid Moisture Cleansing Oil – CAD 26.47

Although finding this online is tough and kind of costly, it is so worth the hunt. If you or someone you know is going to Asia soon, you have to grab this cleansing oil. It’s about CAD 10 at the department stores there.

My boyfriends aunt has this brand littered in her washroom and vanity. When we went to Hong Kong the last time, I forgot to bring a cleanser and relied solely on what she had available. I hate the thought of this because I depend so much on my cleansers, as seen above. Luckily, she has really good taste. After using this oil cleanser and a foaming cleanser from the same brand, I was amazed at both how clean my skin felt and how clear it looked.

When she came back to visit us MONTHS later, she brought two of these babies for me and I quite literally jumped for joy. I will never use another oil cleanser.

LUSH Coalface – CAD 14.95 / 100g

There’s something about a good face wash in the form of a bar of soap that calls my name. I read about this face wash heaps before buying it in February. People claimed that it had cured their acne and although I wont go that far, I will say that it’s a pretty damn good cleanser.

There was a time that I only used this, day and night and I was perfectly happy. I have horribly oily skin so this is now used as my morning cleanser to get my skin ready for the day. It lathers up wonderfully, dries out any active acne lingering on your face, and leaves you with the most beautiful glow. I can’t live without it.

BITE BEAUTY Agave Lip Mask in Champagne – CAD 30

I have always had chapped lips. I carried around a chapstick since I was in elementary school. I finally got fed up early this year when my lips got to the point that they were so dry, they would bleed. I knew I had to try something new, something that would actually work.

I went to Sephora and grabbed this lip mask after hearing so many good things. I apply it generously every night, when I wake up in the morning I’m greeted with baby soft lips. I rarely ever go out without a dab of this on my lips. Champagne has a beautiful rose gold shimmer, leaving you with beautiful, glossy, KISSABLE lips!

It seems a bit steep at 30 dollars but I’ve had it for nearly a year and I still have about half a tube left!

Maybelline Dream Cushion Foundation – CAD 14.99

So I haven’t worn foundation in almost two years. I know that sounds intense but I stopped wearing foundation in 2015 and opted for a CC cream (only where I needed it) and haven’t worn any makeup on my forehead or chin. This is crazy because I used to not be able to leave the house without makeup, now I hate the feeling of it on my skin.

I want to be able to go out for 12 hours without worrying if my makeup is going to look okay. I wanted to be comfortable and be able to touch my skin.

Since discovering this cushion foundation in the summer, I’ve basically used nothing else. My almost two year streak has been broken because of this baby. I’ve gone ahead and purchased more drugstore and high end foundations but ABSOLUTELY NOTHING compares to this. This is on my person at all times and will never leave me side.

It feels so light and comfortable, lasts all day and gives you really decent coverage. It’s also so easy to apply; I use either a beauty blender or a foundation brush… both give me a wonderful finish. I love it so much, I even wrote a blog post on it!

MORPHE Continuous Setting Mist – CAD 15

I struggled with finding a good setting spray. I don’t know if I’m the only one out there that felt like setting sprays made me more greasy. Just me? Probably

This was all laid to rest when I found this setting spray. First of all, it has a really refreshing micro-fine aerosol mist. This is such a bonus because I found every other setting spray to have an unevenly heavy application, leaving me with white dots and sometimes even ruining my makeup.

I set my makeup with this in the morning as it has a nice light scent. My skin feels velvety soft and my makeup is budge proof. I also use it if I need a pick me up throughout the day, I basically bathe in it.

I luckily picked up this glow kit when it was half off at Sephora a month ago. Yup, a month ago and it’s already made its way into my heart and onto my “BEST Beauty Buys of 2017” list.

I am just so over the moon with this palette. Every colour is so unique yet so incredibly wearable. They look great on their own or layered on top of one another for extra dimension. I was on the hunt for a good purple highlighter but surprisingly Lucky Clover (green highlight) stole the show for me!

I have barely gone a day without wearing a highlight from this palette and can confidently say that I have received a compliment a day since purchasing it. If that’s not enough of a selling point, I don’t know what is.

STILA Stay All Day Liquid Lipsticks

Full size 0.10 oz – CAD 29

Mini 3 piece set – 0.05 oz – CAD 26

If you’ve been following my blog or social media this year, this shouldn’t come as a surprise to you. I don’t think there’s any other product I’ve talked about more this year. So much so that my coworker got me a set for Christmas.

I can’t believe I’ve gone so long without discovering this liquid lipstick. They’ve been out for some time but I only just worked my way over to them.

They are so buttery, soft, vivid and opaque. The colours are all so beautiful and the wear you get out of them is insane. I can go 5-6 hours without touching up or reapplying, which is unheard of. They are matte and dry down quickly while staying comfortable throughout the day. 10/10 would recommend to my worst enemy.

Bye 2017

I hope you enjoyed reading about my favourite products as much as I enjoyed using them throughout the year. If you haven’t already tried any of these out, I’m telling you – YOU HAVE TO!

Every single product is hand picked and well thought about, I didn’t want any mediocre products on this list. “I don’t want no mediocre.” – T.I. 2014

What were some of your best beauty buys this year?

I can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store for us, literally and figuratively
