Review – Fenty Beauty by Rihanna

Fenty Beauty by Rihanna

Makeup is there for you to play. It’s there for you to have fun with. It should never feel like pressure and it should never feel like a uniform.

I am so excited to finally be writing this blog post! It feels like I’ve been waiting forever for Fenty beauty to launch.

Rihanna has come out with a great collection of makeup; from brushes to complexion products and lipgloss. She’s got it all.

Not only has Rihanna come out with a revolutionary 40 shades in her foundation range, easily making this one of the most inclusive brands on the market, she has also made her brand 100% cruelty free.

If you’re like me, you’ve looked at Rihanna and wondered how one person could be so flawless. She’s always glowing. She tends to go softer with her make up looks, focusing on a beautiful complexion. I rarely go heavy on my eyes and like to create a soft, natural illusion, so this brand really caught my attention.

I picked up a couple of Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Foundations because I’m never able to match my shade online and as I’m getting paler heading into the winter months, I’ll need a transition/mixing shade. The pro filt’r foundation comes in an amazing 40 shades and has been labeled as one of the most inclusive brands.

The Pro Filt’r Foundation is an oil free, matte, medium to full buildable coverage foundation. It is marketed as a sweat and humidity proof product that is long wearing yet has a “light-as-air texture”

A couple of tips from Fenty Beauty’s office website:

  • Always shake the foundation before applying to “activate” the formula.
  • Let the formula dry completely to find your perfect match and if you’re stuck between two shades to “try the lighter shade.”

I also picked up the Invisimate Blotting Powder since I’m always on the look out for a good setting and touch up powder. Another reason was that I wanted to see how the foundation performed with the powder it was created with.

The foundation is said to set on it’s own and doesn’t need a setting powder but with my skin type, I can’t get away with it. I set my foundation with this powder as well as touched up throughout the day, patting it on my nose, chin and forehead.

Rihanna created this powder with a no shine, no flashback, photo ready formula. She is said to blot with this multiple times a day and has created this so it doesn’t build up, leaving you with a fresh, natural matte look.

One of my biggest mistakes was not grabbing the Trophy Wife Kilowatt Freestyle Highlighter. I’ve been seeing it all over Instagram and need to have it in my collection. Instead I picked up the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Duo in Girl Next Door and Chic Phreak.

Foundation Swatches : Left – 150 (NEUTRAL) | Right – 140 (WARM)

I think that 140 matches me much better and I only know this because I stupidly wore 150 for the entire day and realized after looking in the mirror and getting taken aback by how ghostly I looked.

With 40 shades you would think that it would be easy to find a match, not for me. I always overthink things and constantly grab neutral undertone foundation when I know I have a yellow/warm undertone.

However like I mentioned before, this will come in handy when I’m actually ghostly in a few months!

Left – No makeup | Second to left – Foundation | Second to right – Foundation with blotting powder, blush and highlight | Right – All products in natural lighting

First impression

The foundation is astonishing. I’m really impressed with the look, feel and coverage. I noticed it was very liquidy as I watched it slide around on the back of my hand. When I began to blend it into my skin and saw how quickly it set, I was amazed. You need to work section by section, once it’s dried down it doesn’t budge. I started with laying down one layer and adding more on my scars and sun spots. The coverage impressed me and lasted all day!

The blotting powder was nothing special. I actually prefer my Rimmel Stay Matte powder. The Invisimate Blotting Powder is pretty chalky and dry making it difficult to work with as it’s hard to get any product on your brush or sponge. The one upside is that it had no flash back as promised and did feel light on the skin after touch ups. No build up, no cake.

The blush/highlight duo was great! Mainly the highlight. The blush has a lot of shimmer which I knew going into this review would be a problem for me. It really isn’t the products fault at all, I just find putting shimmer on my textured cheeks really problematic; it emphasizes pores and scars, highlighting many of the things I’d rather hide. The formula is wonderful, a little product goes a long way and it gives you a subtle hint colour with a glow from within. I image someone with flawless skin enjoying this.

The highlighter really blew me away. The formula is so creamy and beautiful. I tapped my brush in the product lightly, went along the top of my cheek bone with one swipe and I couldn’t believe it. The shimmer was so finely milled leaving you with a soft, yet intense, glow.

This line is really impressive. The quality, the price, the packaging. I’m so glad I found this foundation and know that I’ll be using it along with the highlighter everyday.

6.5 hour check in

This is with no primer, a couple of blotting touch ups and an afternoon jog. My pores and lines do look more exaggerated. The foundation began to break up around my jaw and cheeks, letting my redness peak through. It still had a radiant glow through all of this. My blush and highlight were as vivid as when I applied them and most importantly, I wasn’t melting.

I always find a hard time finding a medium coverage foundation that won’t mask me, keeps my skin looking like skin and keeps me shine free. Is that too much to ask? It probably is, I’m a really needy person but Fenty Beauty has fulfilled so many of my wishes.

God bless you, Rihanna.

Take away

If you’re going through the Fenty Beauty website or Sephora and can’t seem to figure out what to pick up, let me help you!

I can almost guarantee that you need this foundation. Whether you like light or full coverage, you’ll be able to play with this and get the finish you want. If you have acne and don’t think this will cover your redness, scarring and pimples, get this to create a beautiful base and tap concealer over any spots that need extra coverage.

Nothing covers the redness around my eyes and this did, leaving me fresh faced and looking awake! You can use this around your eyes and mouth without it leaving you looking flat.

The highlight is a must! It’s so raved about and for good reason. The formula is so creamy and easy to blend, leaving you with the most beautiful glow. It comes in six different colours making it easy to find one that goes with your skin tone or speaks to your soul. I’m definitely going to be picking up a couple of more.

Have you checked out Fenty Beauty? What products from the line are you dying to try out?
